Our Story

From Elizabeth:
Trevor and I saw each other for the first time at Barley’s Brewhaus in Shawnee on October 24, 2013; having actually met via the wonderful World Wide Web a few weeks earlier. I remember being too nervous to get out of the car to wait for Trevor to show up. So once I parked, I sent him a text to see if he was at the restaurant yet. Once I knew he had parked and was walking in, I finally got out of the car. I was worried about having an awkward first encounter since I was so nervous, but luckily for me, Trevor set me at ease by giving me a big hug as he was saying hi. It must be a testament to our connection that this didn’t completely weird me out…because normally I wouldn’t want a stranger hugging me! Trevor making me comfortable right away set the tone for a really good evening with great conversation. The only borderline awkward moment that evening was me telling Trevor that my favorite movie was Encino Man. He thinks I said it was the “best movie of all time” and now he won’t ever let me forget how ridiculous that is. But I maintain that I just told him it was one of my favorites…because how do I know what the greatest movie of all time is?? It’s quite the subjective question, anyway. :)

From Trevor:
Elizabeth and I met online, and while she is technically the one that found me because she liked one of my photos, I still claim that I made the first move, because I initiated the actual conversation. Either way, I am glad that we found each other, otherwise I wouldn't be so lucky as to marry her. I think one of the reasons we hit it off so well was that we have so much in common. For example, during our first date we were discussing favorite movies and one of us brought up the Mighty Ducks. We both agree that the Mighty Ducks is an awesome movie; in fact, I don't think you can be a kid that grew up in the 90's without liking that movie (or the Sandlot). So for our third date, we watched the Mighty Ducks (and handed out Halloween candy to Elizabeth's neighbors, because that was Halloween 2013). Another thing we both enjoy doing is trying new recipes. For our first Christmas together, Elizabeth got me the complete America's Test Kitchen cook book. We enjoy picking random recipes out of the cook book and making them together. In fact, for our first Valentine's Day together, we picked out the recipe for Shepherd's Pie and made it together, and that has become a bit of a tradition for us now. We have actually made that recipe on or around Valentine's Day for all three of the Valentine's Days we have known each other. However, what we have found is that those recipes are a bit involved, so we don't necessarily have the time to make one of those recipes as often as we would like, but we still enjoy cooking together, even if it's just cookies. Another thing we have in common is our enjoyment of lists (or perhaps it's just an enjoyment of order, I'm not real sure). Probably the best example of this is our list of the best pretzels in Kansas City (the Tanner's on 87th Street has them, although I think Fox and Hound on Metcalf has the best actual pretzel if you don't count the cheese they serve with it). That all started with Elizabeth telling me how she really liked pretzels, but she couldn't remember who had the best one. So I thought we clearly needed a list. These are all just examples of how much we enjoy spending time with each other and how much fun we have being together (there are many others, like our trips to Somerset winery in Louisburg). I am only glad that I was able to trick Elizabeth into liking me too. I think she primarily likes me because I knew her cat Weasley was named after a Harry Potter character without being told (and that I put up with her obsession of Lord of the Rings). I'm excited to get married and spend the rest of my life with her, because I know we have many more memories to make, and because I love her!
Addendum: After I wrote this, I heard this song and it made me think of Elizabeth. It does a good job of expressing my feelings for her. Don't worry, I'll make sure you get to hear it at the wedding too!
